Join SPARC for the opening reception of Recent Work by Jonathan Skurnik on Saturday, July 27th from 3:00 pm-6:00 pm. Located in our new gallery space at: SPARC Gallery @ the Fremont Centre 1000 Fremont Avenue, Suite 120 South Pasadena, CA 91030 (entrance in back parking lot) ARTIST STATEMENT When it became clear at the outset of the pandemic that I’d be spending most of my time at home, I decided to work on a body of paintings that would give me the opportunity to experiment with watercolor and gouache, two media that I love but hadn’t worked with extensively. My goal was to explore color and color juxtaposition, glazing, and translucent versus opaque pigment layering. This process also gave me a chance to explore and deepen my personal abstract language. After each painting, I took notes on what I discovered during the process, and which elements I wanted to explore further in the next painting. This led to a delightful evolution from simple color fields to colors with black borders, to the idea of placing a black template of positive and negative apertures on top of simple pastel shapes. Eventually, I cut out a template that could be used to mask a variety of color field paintings. In some of the paintings, I sought to balance positive and negative space so that the distinction would disappear in the viewer’s eye. The aim was to provide a visual experience of non-duality that would serve as both a metaphor and an actual experience of ascendancy past the illusion of multiplicity. I concluded that I either don’t have the skill to achieve this, or it is simply not possible (without taking some kind of hallucinogenic, at least). From there, I transitioned to a more playful approach, with elongated, biomorphic shapes and stripes that suggest algae, seaweed or fungi dancing to primordial rhythms. In all these paintings, one might detect echoes of other painters whose work I admire and unconsciously emulate, and I invite you to guess who these artists might be. Empowering pregnant and parenting women in need to reclaim their lives and build successful family legacies. For two-plus decades, Elizabeth House has been the only Residential Program in the entire San Gabriel Valley that embraces pregnant mothers and their children (up to age five). Since its beginning in 1993, Elizabeth House has committed to meeting needs in this community among the most vulnerable. California is the epicenter of homelessness in this country, and many of the families affected by this are headed by single women. Elizabeth House takes a trauma-informed approach that addresses physical, emotional, spiritual, and economic needs in both women and their children. Often, the team becomes family to the women in need who long for a safe and supportive place to belong. Without exception, the women and children who seek services do so because of difficult life experiences inclusive of poverty, domestic violence, generational family trauma, foster care, substance dependence, and more. Elizabeth House is built on understanding the devastating impact of trauma and believes in the power of Christ to heal and transform all lives. For this reason, the organization provides holistic support, taking the time necessary to get to root causes in order to build afresh. Elizabeth House is in it as long as it takes with the women and children in its programs and creates a personalized experience and plan for each one. The organization is committed to life-long service. Year after year, the team is proud of how much these women accomplish in reclaiming their lives and building successful futures. The organization’s Residential Program can accommodate up to six young families at a time. Residential clients stay through the duration of their pregnancies and for up to four months after their babies are born, living in a supportive, home-like setting, and receiving a full range of care. This includes case management, intensive professional counseling, access to healthcare, parent education, job training, mother-to-mother mentoring, scholarship support, baby supplies, and more. While started as a residential program has grown to include life-long Alumni Services and a Community-Based Program through the organization’s Center for Mother & Child Wellbeing. Alumni Services allows Elizabeth House to see its former residents through for the long haul, and the Community-Based Program provides services to pregnant and parenting women who do not need shelter but do need support. Each year many local organizations, churches, and businesses partner with Elizabeth House to see transformation in the lives of the clients they serve. To lead the way toward a compassionate and caring community for all animals. Pasadena Humane is a donor-supported, nonprofit organization that provides animal care and services for homeless and owned animals in the Greater Los Angeles Area. For more than 117 years, we’ve promoted compassion and care for all animals through lifesaving programs and services to the community that support the human-animal bond and keep pets healthy and safe. In 2020, we had a combined 91.5% live release rate for dogs, cats and critters and saved 100% of healthy and safe animals. Services include: Lost & Found Animal Care & Control Owner Assistance Shelter Shop Health & Wellness Pet Training Licensing Wildlife Pasadena Humane was founded in 1903 by a local Methodist group as “The Pasadena Humane Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children and Dumb Animals.” Like many turn of the century humane societies, Pasadena Humane worked to ensure the humane treatment of draft animals, as well as rescuing and rehoming orphaned and abused children. Companion animals gradually replaced working animals as Pasadena Humane’s main focus, as working horses were retired in favor of modern machines. In 1914, we purchased the property where today’s shelter is located on Raymond Avenue. The oldest building at our shelter dates back to 1929 and is located behind the modern-day dog kennels. The historic building on Raymond Avenue, which currently houses our adoptions office and animal resource center was completed in 1932, and provided a source of employment to local families during the Great Depression. In the post-war years, Pasadena Humane expanded its number of dog kennels, built new cat housing and additional storage facilities. In 1984, Pasadena Humane was recognized as a Cultural Heritage Landmark by the City of Pasadena. The shelter remained essentially untouched until a major renovation was completed in the mid-90s, which greatly expanded onsite animal capacity in a park-like setting and created a dedicated space for humane education activities. In 2014, Pasadena Humane doubled in size with the opening of the Animal Care Center. This new campus includes a low-cost public spay/neuter clinic, behavior and training center, updated dog boarding kennels and expanded retail store. In 2015, the Neely Cat Center and Critter House opened, providing cats, rabbits and other critters an inviting, dedicated space of their own. With campus renovations complete, attention has turned to program development. In the last five years, Pasadena Humane has adopted progressive sheltering practices focused on increasing adoptions, saving the lives of more animals and helping guardians keep their pets. Both happen where “Kids” are the people doing the action, for themselves and others. Movement and motor experiences are crucial to human development, MyKkids basis itself on sensory experiences. As children move, they learn. MyKkids, Kingdom and Kinesthetic curriculum is specifically designed to use the natural environment as a pathway to learn. Children at MyKkids will learn through these types of models of play. MyKkids was formerly known as SP Kinesthetic Kids, a program which was based on a concept created by Douglas Klaif. The original program started in 1999 in a small building on Meridian, in South Pasadena. In 2001, Kinesthetic moved to the United Methodist Church grounds, located at 699 Monterey Road, where it resided until the creation of MyKkids January 1, 2019. Excellence Through Enrichment SPEF provides funds, enrichment programs, and equipment to improve students’ education. This is possible only through the generosity of people like you. The mission of the South Pasadena Educational Foundation is to support educational excellence in the public schools of South Pasadena. We do so by raising funds to supplement the school district’s budget and by operating enrichment programs for local students. In 1979, in response to educational budget conditions not unlike those faced today, a group of concerned parents and community leaders formed the South Pasadena Educational Foundation (SPEF). Incorporated as a 501(c)(3) charity in 1980, SPEF was designated by the South Pasadena Unified School District (SPUSD) as the official private fund-raising organization for the support of the district’s educational programs. Since its inception, SPEF has provided much-needed support to South Pasadenastudents in all their educational needs, including curriculum, science and technology, library services and support, visual and performing arts, foreign languages, character development, critical thinking, career preparation, counseling, and athletics. Donations to SPEF have always supported all five of South Pasadena’s public schools: Arroyo Vista, Marengo, and Monterey Hills elementary schools, South Pasadena Middle School, and South Pasadena High School. Over the past four decades, SPEF has raised close to $14 million to restore and enhance educational programs our school district could not fund alone. SPEF raises funds through donations from area residents and businesses, as well as by administering summer school and after-school programs that provide enhanced learning experiences to local students for a fee. SPUSD schools are the cornerstone of our community and the number one reason families move to South Pasadena. South Pasadena Educational Foundation values and protects the privacy of its donors. Donor contact information is only used to support the mission of SPEF and South Pasadena Unified School District. Your information is never sold nor made available for commercial purposes. Educating individuals and businesses in sustainability practices for the well-being of our community. The removal of some beautiful trees on Milan Avenue was the act that set the founders into motion in 1965. So it is not surprising that the planting and preservation of trees has been a continuing interest and concern of South Pasadena Beautiful. The founding officers and pioneers of South Pasadena Beautiful were the ones who planted the seed that was to grow into an active, totally volunteer organization – dedicated to the belief that pride of community should be promoted, that existing beauty should be recognized and preserved, and that unsightly areas should be dealt with promptly, the hardest goal of all. These founders believed that all this could be accomplished through a volunteer organization which would draw its membership from the people who cared…the community itself. They were right. Those original four officers and a small committee has grown into a board of directors numbering 20 and a general membership of over 200. South Pasadena Beautiful is an all-volunteer 501c3 non-profit organization, founded in 1965 for the purpose of: Organizing and pursuing projects for the improvement of the City of South Pasadena Leading sustainability practices in our community Encouraging pride and engagement of community Recognizing and preserving existing beauty Promoting the improvement of unsightly areas To achieve these goals, SPB works in cooperation with many agencies, including governmental, volunteer, philanthropic and educational organizations. We are proud to partner with our community to pursue sustainable beautification projects in the City of South Pasadena. Find them at: www.southpasbeautiful.org Facebook Instagram
