Grassroots was established in 1968 and is a family-owned and operated business. In 1986, Marla and Meir Puni purchased their modest 1,500 square foot store in a quaint shopping mall in South Pasadena, California. In the early days, the restaurant offered soups, sandwiches, salads, frozen yogurt and their (ever popular) signature apple walnut muffins. The vitamin and grocery departments started small, but were well suited for the health-conscious consumer. Over the years, the store itself has undergone three complete remodels, which doubled its size and staff. The company has integrated more and more sustainable practices within their operation as well. The owners feel it is paramount to preserve the natural environment at Grassroots — and it shows. Today, this homegrown family business is bustling with positive vibes and great people.
